Positive Energy Districts: accelerating the journey towards urban energy transitions

A webinar series on the learnings from the first generation of JPI Urban Europe PED projects

We invite stakeholders of energy transition processes and broader urban transformations to join a DUT webinar series on the opportunities and challenges to accelerate the implementation of Positive Energy Districts.

Positive Energy Districts (PED) are subsystems within cities that aim towards net-zero and climate-neutral urban neighbourhoods through optimised energy efficiency, local generation of renewable energy and by providing a positive impact on the regional energy system through energy flexibility strategies. PEDs bring together energy efficient buildings, renewable energy technology, storage and district energy management systems by leveraging a combination of technological, architectural and social innovation. DUT strategies are outlined in the DUT Roadmap.

The JPI Urban Europe PED Programme (now: the PED Transition Pathway of the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership DUT) has launched calls addressing the challenges of implementing PED concepts. The PED Pilot Call (2020) focused on holistic approaches for PED implementation, applied approaches for integrating PEDs in different urban contexts and the legal framework, and urban governance, stakeholder involvement concepts and business models. From this call, four projects were selected for funding:

    • Cities4PEDs
    • INTERACT
    • PED-ID
    • TRANS-PED

After two years of work and a series of cross-project workshops, the projects will present and discuss their findings and learnings in a series of lunch-time webinars on Fridays in January and February. Each webinar will focus on a different aspect of PED development and will consist of a short input, followed by a panel discussion of project partners in an open and interactive setting.
