Under the Nature Restoration Regulation, cities must make sure their urban green space doesn't shrink and, from 2030 onwards, starts growing. But cities also need to build, and building on vacant land inside the city spares natural land and farmland outside it. That puts vacant sites at the centre of a hard choice.
On 21 October, DUT runs a workshop at the European Urban Initiative's event on the Nature Restoration Regulation in Vienna. Led by Poznań University of Technology, the City of Poznań and Bax Innovation, it explores how cities can judge what a vacant site is really worth before deciding its future. That means looking beyond hectares to the site's value for nature, for the local economy and for the people who live around it, especially taking into account who the site should serve. Following EDITUA's Urban EcoComposer approach, cities assess, compare and discuss plans for a vacant site and leave with a practical approach they can use in their own cities.
