URBAN ARENA

URBAN ARENA transforms European and national R&D outcomes into practical, scalable solutions for local urban transformation.

URBAN ARENA bridges the gap between R&D funding and implementation, accelerating investments in urban transitions and leveraging outcomes from national and transnational research programmes.

The first URBAN ARENA on seasonal heat storage is a two-year pilot programme within the DUT Partnership, advancing urban energy transformation through 16 concrete projects across Germany.

Networking event brings together industry and research

URBAN ARENA brings together industry and research by matchmaking formats like project pitches. For the first URBAN ARENA a two-day conference successfully brought together heat suppliers and researchers through four parallel sessions, eight thematic forums, project pitches, and a site visit to Germany's largest heat storage facility under construction. The event formed collaborative teams of heat suppliers and research institutes to realise seasonal heat storage projects.

Fast-track to implementation

Through matchmaking and following team play concrete project proposals emerge. Within the first URBAN ARENA 15-20 teams are receiving funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Durations of the feasibility studies funded as micro-projects range from January 2026 to end of 2026. Thereby, the innovative micro-project funding approach accelerates implementation, creating a faster route to market for innovative solutions.
