European cities face growing climate, environmental, and social challenges, including heatwaves, flooding, biodiversity loss, and increasing inequalities. At the same time, many underused or vulnerable urban spaces remain disconnected from community needs and ecological functions. Existing approaches to green infrastructure, social infrastructure, and emergency planning are often developed separately, limiting cities’ ability to respond effectively to both everyday needs and crises. AdaptHub addresses this challenge by developing a shared European framework for transforming these spaces into adaptive, multifunctional green-social infrastructures. The project investigates how ecological performance, social inclusion, and emergency preparedness can be integrated within a single planning approach. It also explores how the use and performance of urban spaces change over time, providing municipalities with evidence-based methods and practical tools to create more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities
AdaptHub will develop and test a shared European framework for transforming underused and vulnerable urban spaces into adaptive, multifunctional green-social infrastructures. The project combines urban analysis, co-creation with local stakeholders, pilot demonstrations, and scientific evaluation to design solutions that improve climate resilience, biodiversity, social inclusion, and emergency preparedness. A key innovation is the integration of time into urban planning, enabling cities to better understand how spaces evolve and function under changing conditions. Pilot implementations in Italy, Spain, Poland, and Turkey will demonstrate the framework under diverse environmental, social, and climatic contexts. The resulting methodologies, decision-support tools, and adaptable design principles will help municipalities and planners replicate successful solutions across Europe, supporting more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban development
AdaptHub will provide cities with practical, science-based tools to transform underused urban spaces into adaptive, multifunctional green-social infrastructures that strengthen resilience to climate change while enhancing quality of life. The project will deliver a shared European framework, transferable planning methodologies, decision-support tools, and design principles that can be adapted to different urban contexts. By demonstrating and evaluating solutions in four European countries, AdaptHub will generate evidence on how integrated approaches can improve climate adaptation, biodiversity, social inclusion, and preparedness for future crises. The project will support municipalities, planners, and policymakers in making informed, long-term decisions, while fostering collaboration between researchers, public authorities, industry, and communities. Ultimately, AdaptHub will contribute to more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities across Europe, with solutions that are scalable, replicable, and aligned with the goals of the European Green Deal and the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership
