The project aims at examining the challenges and opportunities that urban circular grassroots initiatives encounter to create, maintain and scale their solutions for sustainable and inclusive transitions from below.
Cities are spaces of overconsumption, waste-intensive production, and high environmental footprints, but also hubs for creativity and innovation. Citizens experiment with a wealth of innovations to address the challenge of a steady consumption growth and overuse of resources. Despite their contributions further research is necessary to investigate the challenges and opportunities to diffuse these practices in terms of:

a) space (in central/periurban city districts),
b) collaborative and democratic arenas among local government, urban planners and grassroots organizations,
c) inclusivity and scalability of the grassroots initiatives (challenges to meet their ambitions, grow, replicate and expand their sharing/circularity practices).

The project adopts an inter/transdisciplinary and participatory action-research approach in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Gothenburg and Nantes, building on our previous research from several disciplines (sociology, human geography, urban planning, social psychology, consumption, business and public administration) and areas (repairing, housing, food, recycling).

The project builds upon co-production spaces between grassroots initiatives, scholars and policymakers in the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Gothenburg, and Nantes. The transdisciplinary and cocreation approach produces applied research, oriented to provide solutions to local challenges in each city. It also advances inclusive policy interventions in collaboration with the local governments and the civil society organizations.

The project adopts an inter- and transdisciplinary participatory action research approach in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Gothenburg, and Nantes, drawing on our earlier work across sociology, geography, urban planning, social psychology, business, and public administration. It focuses on key domains such as housing, food, repair, and recycling.
We create co-production spaces where grassroots initiatives, scholars, and policymakers collaborate. This transdisciplinary process generates applied research tailored to local challenges, while also advancing inclusive policy interventions in partnership with local governments and civil society organizations.

Concrete actions include: (1) city reports translating research findings into policy recommendations; (2) a “Right to the City” webinar series to support exchange among policymakers, grassroots actors, and researchers; and (3) local workshops that foster dialogue and joint problem-solving.

By working in cities where researchers have long-standing involvement with practitioners, we strengthen just transition governance and contribute to durable, practical, and inclusive solutions.
