The success of the energy transition relies heavily on the engagement and support of local communities. Social and cultural centres are often central to these communities—providing spaces for connection, dialogue, and collective action. They foster social ties, promote learning, and mobilise people around environmental and social causes.
But can these centres also serve as catalysts for climate adaptation and the energy transition?
Co-PED investigates this question, exploring the potential of social and cultural centres to drive the development of Positive Energy Districts and support a just, community-centered energy transition.
Eight Urban Living Labs across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas in Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden will test innovative energy community models through feasibility studies, co-design workshops, mapping legal frameworks, and developing tools to support social and cultural centres in their energy transition.
Co-PED will strengthen collaboration between energy producers and consumers, increase community participation, and demonstrate how SCCs can become central actors in overcoming energy poverty and driving an inclusive energy transition. Our insights will inform local and EU-level policy, ensuring that energy transitions are not only technically sound, but also socially embedded and community-driven.
