The aRTes project tackles the widespread underuse of rooftops in Southern European  cities, despite their significant potential for enhancing sustainability, climate  resilience, and urban well-being. Rooftops can become key infrastructures for green  spaces, renewable energy production, social interaction, and even logistics. However,  their transformation faces legal, technical, economic, and social barriers. aRTes addresses these challenges by focusing on how to activate these spaces in ways that are locally adaptable and socially inclusive. It responds to pressing urban needs like heat reduction, carbon neutrality, and citizen well-being, aligning with EU priorities such as the New European Bauhaus and the Renovation Wave.

The aRTes project proposes a set of integrated physical and digital solutions to activate rooftops as accessible, multi-purpose spaces for Southern European cities. It develops modular components designed to improve insulation, manage stormwater, and enable flexible rooftop uses, including small-scale greening and food production. Other solutions include photovoltaic pergolas, perimetral walls, and innovations for safe and inclusive rooftop access. These elements are supported by digital tools for co-design, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement. The solutions will be tested and refined through pilot installations in Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus. The approach focuses on adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and usability with the aim of
demonstrating how rooftops can evolve into inclusive, productive, and climate-conscious urban infrastructure.

The project aims to deliver scalable and replicable rooftop transformation models that bring concrete benefits: increased urban green space, improved energy efficiency,  reduced heat island effects, and enhanced social cohesion. It will support cities in creating climate-resilient infrastructures while also promoting local food production, renewable energy, and sustainable logistics (e.g., last-mile delivery via drones). The expected outcomes include a measurable increase in rooftop utilization, citizen engagement in co-designed solutions, and practical policy and design guidelines for municipalities. Ultimately, aRTes will contribute to healthier, greener, and more inclusive cities across Southern Europe.
